CORNELIUS HISTORY

Cornelius was named for Colonel Thomas R. Cornelius, a pioneer of 1845. He was the son of Benjamin Cornelius, who with his family emigrated to Oregon during that year as a member of the Meek party. The City was incorporated in the spring of 1893, and in the 1800’s Cornelius had many small enterprises, a winery cider mill, pickle factory, 2 creameries, 3 sawmills, warehouses, blacksmiths, general stores and drug stores. The founder of the city, T.R. Cornelius, had six children, including two twins. Because of one of those twins' later delivery of triplets and a number of other sets of twins in the family, the town of Cornelius earned the nickname "Oregon's Family Town" and is still a fantastic place to raise a family, large or small.
