Canby
Located in the Willamette Valley southeast of Portland, Canby offers the three best features of Suburban Portland living - a charming neighborhood feel with a thriving community, easy commuting access to the best Portland's downtown has to offer, and new and exciting business and industry opportunities. Canby lies near Interstate 5 and Interstate 205, two of the major thoroughfares along the West Coast, connecting this cozy community to Portland and beyond. The Canby Real Estate market is filled with exciting opportunities for new construction homes and classic Oregon homes in a historical area, perfect for first-time home buyers, home size changes, and growing families. Canby is one of the premier Portland suburban locations for shovel-ready ground, perfect for new construction of homes and businesses. Canby is located in Clackamas County, which has been strongly supporting local business and investment with its tax incentives for new projects in this cozy hometown. The City of Canby's Urban Renewal District project distributes grants for developments and renovations, including the new 300-acre Pioneer Industrial Park. With these new construction projects, Canby is establishing itself as a leader in new development and job creation in Oregon and the Northwest. It's also the perfect place to raise a family, thanks to the great schools, community support, and neighborhood resources, including the Canby Growers Farmers' Market and the Clackamas County Fair. Canby is home to some outstanding restaurants, pubs, and coffee shops, and has an all-around classic small town feel.
Much of Canby's development centered around the rich agricultural land and prime location in the Willamette Valley. On the high plateau, bordered by the Willamette and Molalla Rivers, Canby was once the seasonal meeting place for tribes of local Indians and was well known for its annual crop of wild strawberries. The city of Canby was known as Baker's Prairie when it was first founded in 1857. William Knight and four sons moved to Baker Prairie in 1868. They were instrumental in Canby's early development as they opened one of the first general stores, built many local buildings, served as postmaster, school clerk, sheriff, druggist, blacksmith, carpenter and more. William Knight's 1874 home still stands at 525 SW Fourth Avenue as does the 1890 Knight Building on NW First Avenue, the original meeting place of City Council and first home of Carlton & Rosenkrans, "Clackamas County's largest department store." Canby is named for Edward Richard Sprigg Canby, hero of the Civil and Indian Wars, who had arrived in Oregon only one week earlier to assume command of the U.S. Army's Department of the Columbia and the new town was given this hero's name. The towns of Canby in Modoc County, California and Canby in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota are also named after him. The city was platted in 1870 and incorporated by the Oregon Legislative Assembly on February 15, 1893.
